Send Valentine's wished to dogs in our community

Students and teachers at Rossview Elementary School have been working hard this week making Valentines cards for dogs in our community that are chained or penned 24/7 in an effort to encourage those families to bring pets INSIDE the home and make them part of the family. We still need quite a few addresses in order to meet our goal of mailing 200 cards.

In addition to the Valentine cards, these families will receive coupons for FREE dog treats and the opportunity to spay or neuter that pet at little to no expense. We also hope to provide treat bags for each of our little artists who design a card.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

1. We need addresses of families in Clarksville-Montgomery Co. & surrounding areas (i.e. Dover, Erin, etc.) who chain or pen their animals all day, every day or who chain or pen for long periods of time each day with questionable standards.

Perhaps you pass one of these dogs on your way to work or school? Perhaps one lives in your neighborhood or a friend or family member's neighborhood? Jot down the full street address and reply to this email with the address or call it in to 931-648-8042 (leave a message if during non-business hours) no later than this coming Sunday.

2. Make a donation to help offset expenses for postage and for treat bags for our little artists who design Valentine cards!

3. Forward this email to family or friends that may be able to send us addresses. Be assured that all address submissions will remain anonymous!

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR COMMITMENT TO BETTER THE LIVES OF CHAINED DOGS IN OUR COMMUNITY.

Draft Framework for the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease

Today marks a milestone in our efforts to address the Alzheimer's epidemic with the release of the "Draft Framework for the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease" by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

This initial framework highlights many solutions to the challenges raised by advocates like you from across the country and identified by Congress in the passing of the National Alzheimer's Project Act one year ago.

Next, in the coming weeks we will be expecting the Administration to release a draft plan that details how, specifically, it proposes to accomplish the goals and strategies listed in this framework.

Please take a moment to Read the Draft Framework and let us know what you think.

Your comments will continue to play a vital role as we work with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to achieve what she called, "an aggressive and coordinated national strategy" on Alzheimer's. And as promised in our previous messages, we will continue to keep you updated throughout this process and call upon you to take action when important changes arise.

On behalf of the more than 5 million individuals living with Alzheimer’s and their 15 million caregivers, thank you for your feedback. Like you, we are dedicated to ensuring a National Alzheimer's plan that is urgent, transformational, achievable and accountable – anything less is unacceptable.

Sincerely,

Robert Egge

Winter Nature Watch Opportunities in Land Between The Lakes

Got the winter blues?

Embrace the season by joining us for one of the many wildlife-viewing van tours offered at Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area. During January, February, and March, there are multiple guided tours offering outdoor enthusiasts a chance to witness some of nature’s greatest moments.

Registration is required for all tours, and space is limited. Please call 270-924-2020, weekdays from 8 am-4:30 pm, to learn more about each tour and make your reservation.

Our ongoing Nature Watch tour series highlights many birds that call this area home during the winter. During these tours, you may see everything from pelicans to pintails!

An all-day Nature Watch tour on January 14, will take you in search of eagles and some of the 25+ species of ducks that call LBL home in the winter.

We'll also cover the fascinating story of local bald eagle recovery by visiting several unique landmarks in LBL. The cost is $40/person and includes lunch at a local restaurant.

LBL continues to offer Eagle Viewing Van Tours from 1-4:30 pm on Sundays, Jan. 22, 29, and February 5. Winter is the peak season for seeing bald eagles in LBL; both our resident eagles and visiting "snowbirds" are out looking for fish around the lakes. We'll take you to the best spots in LBL for spotting these magnificent creatures. Cost is $7/adult and $5/child.

On February 11, we will offer a special Nature Watch tour that brings you to Cross Creeks National Wildlife Refuge, just south of LBL. We will explore this bottomland habitat in search of harriers, sandhill cranes, and thousands of migrant ducks. The cost is $10/adult and $7/child and runs from 9am-12pm.

The month of March offers a chance to see hundreds of pelicans as they migrate through the area, as well as our resident eagles on their giant nests, incubating eggs or sheltering their chicks.

Join us on either March 18 or 24, for a Nature Watch tour that highlights these two amazing species. This two-hour tour costs $7/adult and $5/child.

Winter doesn't have to be spent inside! Join us for any of these fun wildlife-viewing tours:

LBL Announces Winter 2011 Eagle Viewing Trips

Bundle up in your favorite sweater, come outdoors, and experience the enchanting sights on a bald eagle viewing trip, offered again at Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area throughout the winter months.

Back by popular demand, LBL hosts a weekend of river cruises January 14-15, and a special Martin Luther King, Jr. Day cruise January 16, for up close views of the eagles from the water.

Despite cold temperatures that usually keep people indoors, bald eagles thrive in winter conditions. What better way to view bald eagles than relaxing on a river cruise in the comforts of the spacious and beautifully appointed CQ Princess? The 96-foot CQ Princess luxury yacht offers wonderful views from both outside on deck and indoors where it's toasty warm!

"LBL is a major wintering spot for bald eagles from northern areas such as Michigan and Canada," said Carrie Szwed, Nature Station Public Programs Coordinator. "Because of excellent coordination between state and federal agencies in past years to restore eagle habitats and populations, we have seen tremendous increases in eagles both wintering and nesting in this area."

LBL also hosts eagle viewing van trips. During these, LBL guides take visitors to the best wildlife viewing hot spots on the 170,000-acre recreation area. Visitors will most likely see migratory bald eagles, gulls, and other waterfowl, as well as native wildlife species, such as deer and turkey.

Visitors can enjoy viewing the eagles December through February. Van trips meet and depart from the Golden Pond Visitor Center unless otherwise indicated.

Visitors are advised to dress appropriately for the weather and to wear shoes suitable for moderate walking. Also, don't forget to bring binoculars and field guides. River cruises depart from Kenlake State Resort Park Marina. Reservations and full deposits are required for all trips. "Eagle excursions are very popular, so early reservations are encouraged," said Szwed. Gift certificates are available.

LBL 2011 Archery Season

Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area deer archery season is open Saturday, Sept 24, 2011 through January 16, 2012. The only exception is for quota hunt days and the day immediately before each quota hunt.

The quota hunt days for the Tennessee portion are Oct 15-16, Nov 11-12, and Nov 26-27. The quota hunt days for the Kentucky portion are Oct 29-30 and Nov 19-20.

Deer hunting provides a unique recreational opportunity within the LBL region and helps maintain a healthy deer population. LBL invites visitors to hone their archery skills on the archery practice range and field archery range trail at the Golden Pond Target Range. The range is located just off US68/KY80 and is open from dawn to dusk on a first-come, first-served basis.

During LBL's 2011-2012 archery season hunters may harvest two white-tailed deer, including one antlered buck, unless a buck has already been harvested on LBL. Deer harvested on both the Kentucky and Tennessee portions of LBL are bonus deer and does not count towards statewide deer bag limits.

Appropriately licensed archers can also harvest one turkey of either sex (requires state turkey permit), squirrels, woodchucks, coyotes, armadillos, and feral hogs. Hunters are not required to check in for deer archery hunting at LBL, but must have a valid state hunting license, big game permit, and hunters age 16 and over need to purchase an LBL Hunter Use Permit ($20).

A Hunter Safety Card is required as specified by state law. For youth hunters under age 16 who do not have a hunter safety card, see LBL's website for additional safety requirements. Hunters must abide by regulations in the 2011-2012 Deer Hunting Information sheets that are available at LBL visitor facilities, on our website, or by calling 270-924-2065 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Additional hunting information, maps, and prescribed fire information is also available.

We encourage visitors to review our website at www.lbl.org each season, and throughout the season, for our Calendar of Events, maps, updates on programs and policies, safety information, and temporary trail and road closures.

Daily at 11 a.m., visitors will be able to experience Greek mythology during a vibrant laser light show. LBL Planetarium manager Don Partain said, "Legends of the Night Sky is a great way to provide an educational experience for the entire family. Our entertaining characters and lively stories about Orion and Andromeda leave viewers wanting to learn more about astronomy."

For music lovers, LBL will offer Laser Light Music Shows Tuesdays ($5), Fridays and Saturdays ($6) at 7 and 8:30 p.m. The shows contain laser lights synchronized to popular music ranging from country to pop.
