NATIVE CULTURAL CIRCLE
Mission Statement: The mission of the Native Cultural Circle is to provide quality educational programs and materials to the residents of middle Tennessee and south central Kentucky including Ft. Campbell, about the cultures and traditions of the native peoples of the Americas. We are organized exclusively for "charitable, educational, and scientific purpose" under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. History: The Native Cultural Circle (NCC) is made up of all volunteers. It was organized by David Baker and Douglas "Red" Kirby in 1997. Over the course of the years, members have presented demonstrations, story telling, and talks about the cultures and traditions of the native peoples of the Americas. We have participated in multicultural events sponsored by the Montgomery County, Ft. Campbell and Hopkinsville school systems, area Head Start programs, Boy and Girl Scout programs, the Summer Reading Program for the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library, as well as many service organizations and area churches. Annual Powwows: The NCC has hosted an annual powwow in the local area since October 1998. Our first powwow was held on the Austin Peay State University campus but due to the tornado of 1999 the second powwow was relocated to Ft. Campbell, KY. In 2000, we were able to find a permanent location for our annual event across the Red River from the Port Royal State Park. The Port Royal historic area has significant importance to the native community because it is the last documented campsite in Tennessee of the Northern Route of the Trail of Tears. In 2005, the NCC agreed to work with the EEOC Office of Ft. Campbell to help them host a powwow to celebrate the Federal Native American Month in November. Member activities: NCC holds monthly business meetings on the first Wednesday of each month. Our annual Holiday Pot Luck in December and an annual Winter Social in February is for members, family and friends. During the year we have classes. Our most recent class was a beginning dance shawl making class. Future classes include: beading, moccasin and dance regalia construction. Membership: Our membership is not restricted to those with Native American heritage. We welcome anyone who is sincerely interested in learning and is willing to share what they learn. Our annual membership dues are nominal to insure that everyone who is interested in joining our Circle can afford to do so. If you are interested, please feel free to attend a monthly business meeting on the first Wednesday of each month. Business meetings are held at the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library at 6:30 pm. Service requests: If your organization or group is interested in having one or more of our members come to share with you, please contact one of the following: Philenese or Paul Slaughter, (931) 358-4187 Douglas "Red" Kirby or Chrisie, (931) 358-1246 Donald Watkins, (931) 232-9275

MCARC was established in this county in 1952 by Katherine Rudolph and a small group of local parents. Their primary goals, in the beginning, were to establish education rights for all children regardless of abilities. Later, the local chapter worked with all state and national chapters to acquire financial stability,( SSA and SSI), and health care access, (Medicare and Medicaid), for individuals with mental retardation.
Today, the MCARC is an advocacy unit of the national organization, The ARC. Although they do not directly provide services for individuals with mental retardation or similar disabilities, they do advocate on their behalf by assisting families in acquiring SSI,SSA or adult services in the state of Tennessee.
Additionally, MCARC provides social outlets for adults with M/R by hosting a monthly Saturday Recreation Program the first Saturday of each month.
For approximately 15 years, MCARC has raised funds for its activities by operating a small thrift store, ARC Thrift Store. The store is currently located at 312 Madison in beautiful downtown Clarksville! Open Monday – Saturday from 9 AM – 5PM, this
501 (C) (3) organization accepts donations daily and can give tax receipts for all donations.
For further information about MCARC or The ARC Thrift Store you can call (931) 905-0900.
